Before you start

Have these ready: your property address or parcel number, a description of the work, and your plans or drawings. For contractor work, you'll also need the contractor's license number.

Step 1: Check if you need a permit

Most structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work needs a permit. Minor repairs — painting, replacing a faucet — usually don't. If you're unsure, call the Building Department before you begin.

Step 2: Apply online

Create an account in the Permits portal, choose your permit type, and fill in the project details. Upload your plans as PDFs.

Step 3: Pay the fee

Fees are based on the value of the work. You'll see the exact amount before you submit. Payment is by card or bank transfer.

Step 4: Review and inspection

A plans examiner reviews your application — typically within 10 business days. Once approved, post the permit on site and schedule inspections at each required stage.

Step 5: Final approval

After the final inspection passes, your permit is closed and the work is officially on record. Keep a copy for your files and for any future sale of the property.
